Pharma industry vs. biotech

Biotech is the application of the principles of biology and technology to create, modify or improve living organisms, biological products and processes to meet human needs. This may include the use of microorganisms, animal and plant cells, or biochemical processes to produce products or services.

Biotech can be applied in various fields, such as agriculture, food, energy and environment, medicine, among others. For example, in medicine, biotechnology is used to develop gene and protein therapies to treat diseases.

A biotechnologist can design and improve technological systems supported by living beings. They can participate in the identification and characterization of microorganisms of industrial use and their possibilities in the manufacture of products. They also have the ability to isolate and manipulate biomolecules and microorganisms through the use of molecular biology, microbiology and biochemistry techniques in order to produce new drugs and foods, for example..

The pharma industry is an economic sector dedicated to the research, development, production and marketing of drugs for the treatment, prevention or diagnosis of diseases. This industry is responsible for creating products that save lives and improve the quality of life for people around the world.

The pharma industry includes a wide range of activities, from research and development of new drugs to manufacturing, distribution and marketing of finished products. In addition, the pharma industry is highly regulated by the health authorities of each country to ensure the safety and efficacy of drugs.

Drugs can be made from synthetic chemical compounds or of natural origin, and can be formulated in different forms, such as tablets, capsules, injectables, creams, among others.

What does a pharmaceutical scientist do

A pharmaceutical scientist is dedicated to the study of drugs and their application in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. His or her work focuses on the development, research and evaluation of drugs, as well as their effectiveness in clinical practice.

Tasks that a pharmaceutical scientist may perform include the following.

  • Research and development of new drugs
  • Preparation of pharmaceutical formulas.
  • Analysis and quality control of drugs to ensure that they meet the required quality and safety standards
  • Advice to patients and health professionals on the proper use of drugs.

Pharma vs. biotech

Both the pharma and biotech industries produce drugs (although that is not all that biotechnology can do). In conclusion, although biotechnology obtains its products from the extraction or manipulation of living organisms, and the pharmaceutical industry works in the creation of chemical-based drugs, both industries are important and may even merge to work together and thus enhance the manufacture and effectiveness of some drugs that improve the quality of human life.
